Data Flags of the World

Flag designs driven by characteristic country data.

This graphic shows new designs for flags of the world based on a country's Population, Geographical Region, GDP Growth Rate, Unemployment Rate, Public Debt as a percentage of GDP, and GDP Per Capita. A black slash through the entire flag means that the country has a negative GDP growth over the past 5 years. A gray quadrant means that this data is not available for the country. A few patterns can be seen here:

Data was taken from The World Bank. Only countries with populations greater than 300,000 are shown. Created with Processing.

Geographical Region

Geographical region is represented as color on this range. From left to right: Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East/North Africa, North America, South and Centeral America, Sub-Saharan Africa. Population is shown as a white circle of differing sizes, with a golden cross indicating that the population is greater than 100mil.

% of Population Unemployed

The percent of the population unemployed as a value from Red to Green. Red suggests a high percent of population is without work, while a green hue suggests lower unemployment.

National Debt as % of GDP

Countries with a high national debt have a deep red lower left quadrant. Countries with less debt are in the black.

GDP per Capita

Measured in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). More saturated blue exhibits higher PPP per person, while blacker tones reflect a lower value.
